Agentic workflows: a field guide from building one

Nine shapes an agent workflow can take, what broke when I built a harness to run them on the subscriptions I already pay for, how the tools get assigned, and what it all cost. Everything below was measured on real runs.

Written 22 October 2026 from Rigging, my private desktop app that runs graphs of Claude, Codex and Grok agents. Six tabs; start with the shapes.

A diamond: a goal splits into three workers, each checked, then merged into one answer. Goal Split Worker Worker Worker Check Check Check Merge
The diamond: the shape most research jobs end up as.

Nine shapes

An agent is an AI that can use tools. A node is one agent doing one job. An edge carries a result to the next node. The shape is how you wire them. Pick one on the left.

    Building something like this?

I am happy to talk through a shape, a harness problem or a cost you cannot explain.
